The week when I opened my retail shop several years ago, I realized the front windows needed to be washed.
(My slum landlord cancelled the cleaning service to save his money)
Opening the shop Labor Day weekend felt like we had just given birth. We endured 30 consecutive days of back-breaking labor. In the middle of a North Carolina heatwave.
It was a soft open -the grand opening was planned for October 1.
Alone in the shop, I realized that the front windows needed to be washed. My husband was still at home. I’m pretty handy. I know how to setup a ladder.
I strolled to the back of the shop. I grabbed my tall ladder, propped it up on the sidewalk. Proceeding to work washing the windows.
But the sidewalk was uneven.
Think: cobblestone.
I was doing pretty well. Although I didn’t realize how much swaying I was conducting. Standing at the top, I attempted to reach the highest window.
You know that feeling of your feet and knees not being in sync with each other -just about the moment you’re about to fall?
I felt a weight pushing against my center back to steady me.
My feet and knees locked together in rhythm. The moment I steadied myself was the moment I promptly descended off the ladder.
I’m not sure who or what pushed up against me but thank Gods it happened.
Lesson: The windows can wait.
